Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit with more than 40 years of experience providing safe and healthy housing by partnering with the help of corporations and community members. The lives of low-income homeowners are transformed through the improvement in the safety and health of their homes and the revitalization of their communities.

How It All Started
1973 – Midland, Texas – the idea started with the simple act of neighbors helping neighbors. Realizing there was a growing need in their community, that Midland homeowners could not afford home repairs on their own, volunteers got together to do the work for them – in April – at no cost to the homeowner. Out of this community kindness was conceived Christmas in April.
Eventually Midland’s mission spread beyond the idea of providing service only once a year in April to bringing together volunteers helping their neighbors all year-round. In 1988, this became the organization known as Rebuilding Together.
Building a Healthy Neighborhood
Building a Healthy Neighborhood is another of Rebuilding Together’s annual events. Every year this event highlights the core values central to the mission – safe and healthy housing, and community revitalization.
This year, the event took place in New Orleans, helping to rebuild a home in the 9th Ward. Mr. Floyd Brown is 64, and a longtime homeowner in the ward. Having recently lost his wife and now living alone, Floyd urgently needed extensive accessibility repairs in order to feel safe navigating his home.
The installation of a wheelchair ramp greatly increased Floyd’s safety and freedom to come and go from his home with his disability. Additionally, siding replacement helped to create an airtight and watertight seal that will lowers his utility bills.
Floyd now has a greater sense of security in his home, thanks to this year’s Building a Healthy Neighborhood event.
